Manhattan

Bayamo
@704 Broadway (near Bleeker Street) N.Y.C. NY, (212) 475-5151 Is a Cuban-Chinese Restaurant located downtown near NYU. Its a hot Tuesday night hang out spot for Salsa dancers who want an alternative to dancing at the COPACABANA. DJ and live salsa music with Cruz Control. Many patrons love the combo of eating excellent Cuban-Chinese dishes with an evening of dancing. Many good dancers frequent Tuesday nights, but if your into serious dancing, then the B.Y.O.P. policy is suggested. The worst that could happen is that you'll end up having more than one partner to dance with.

Bistro Latino
1711 Broadway (& 54th Street) N.Y.C. NY, (212) 956-1000 Bistro Latino is a restaurant/bar with a small dance floor. Like Bayamo, it offers the combo of eating fine Latin Cuisine with DJ Latin Music every night. Its a nice place to take someone out for a quiet night of eating and dancing. The DJ usually features salsa, merengue and cumbia (they even have a Tango night). The B.Y.O.P. rule is in effect. The club does not play enough Salsa music. For more info call.

Cafe' Remy
104 Greenwich Street, N.Y.C. NY, I hear that Wednesday is the hot night of the week for this club. It features DJ and live music. Cafe Remy is located downtown near NYC's Wall Street area. The club which caters to the Latino Wall Street afterwork crowd is two floors high. In reality its a bar that is turned into a dance club. Follow the B.Y.O.P. rule.

Copacabana
@617 West 57th Street, N.Y.C. NY, (212) 582-COPA The Copacabana or Copa as it is affectionately called by many, is probably the largest Salsa/Mambo club in New York. It has not one but two dance floors. The larger one features DJ and live Salsa bands every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and now Sundays too. The smaller dance floor features DJ rap, hip-hop and other popular music. Though the club is very popular on any given night, Tuesday night is traditionally known in New York as Copa night. The club has recently begun to open its doors on a Sunday night drawing a decent size crowd looking for that extra evening out before hitting the pavement the next day for work. A free buffet is served every Tuesday and Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. when the Copa caters to the after-work crowd. The Sunday night addition also boasts of a free buffet for the early crowd. Dancers of all levels flock to hear and dance to the tunes of popular Salsa bands. As a general rule, many of the better dancers avoid Friday and Saturday nights unless they are coming to hear a particular band or singer perform or have come to celebrate a special event like a birthday. So the B.Y.O.P. rule may be in effect from time to time. A very popular club that even a dance floor that size can get over crowded. The Copa can be considered one of the better Salsa Clubs in NYC. Call for more info.

El Flamingo
@547 West 21th Street, N.Y.C. NY, (212) 243-2121 El Flamingo use to be one of the two hot Sunday mambo spots (the other being Side Street up in the Bronx). The club features both DJ and live Salsa/mambo music. The club has begun to cater to a younger crowd with more hip-hop, merengue & house and less Salsa/mambo music. Recommend the B.Y.O.P. rule for those thinking of hitting this spot for a night of dancing. For more info Call or Check out www.SalsaNewYork.com

La Maganette
@825 3rd Ave. & 50th street, N.Y.C. NY, (212) 759-5677 Latin bands play there every Wednesday night. La Maganette caters to the after work crowd. They offer free admission with a complimentary buffet from 5-7 p.m. If you're into dancing, the B.Y.O.P is highly advise.

Latin Quarter
@2551 Broadway (at 96 Street), N.Y.C. NY, (212) 864-7600 This is another of the New York powerhouses of Salsa/mambo dance spots. Its about one third the size of the Copa but has a strong following. Dancers of all levels frequent this spot. Like the Copa, many of the better dancers avoid Friday and Saturday nights (unless they are coming to hear a particular band or singer perform or have come to celebrate a special event like a birthday). So the B.Y.O.P. rule may be in effect from time to time. If Tuesday is known to be Copa night, then Thursdays has traditionally been considered to be Latin Quarter night. The club features DJ & live Salsa bands Thursdays thru Sunday and is normally divided into 2 sections (by a removable wall). When the wall is up, the second dance floor is available for those seeking rap, hip-hop and other popular music. Like most NY clubs, Latin Quarters can get too crowded on weekends. The club also offers Mambo dance classes on Thursday nights from 7-9 p.m. Currently these classes are being taught by Angel & Addie Rodriquez of Razz M' Tazz (RMT) Dance School.

"Latin Tinge Thursdays".
Free dance class from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM with Razz M' Tazz. Ladies free all night. Men free until midnight, then $10 after midnight. Prices subject to change on certain nights. Live broadcast on La Mega with Polito Vega 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM. There is a small crowd of good dancers that show up to this club on Thursdays. LQ shows promise, especially since Bistro Latino is no longer the Thursday night spot for dancers. Go to www.SalsaNewYork.com for this month's current Latin Quarters events info.

Las Vegas Night Club
@179 Dyckman Street (at Vermilyea Street) N.Y.C. NY (212) 942-1516 This is another club I haven't been too, but I hear that they feature more Meregue than Salsa here. My sources tell me that the Las Vegas Night Club is a very popular uptown spot and might be worth a visit. As a precaution, B.Y.O.P. your first time there.

Les Poulets Cafe
@16 West 22 Street N.Y.C. NY (212) 229-2000 Les Poulets Cafe offers DJ and live Salsa music Thursday through Sunday. They have a second dance floor and DJ located downstairs which features house, reggae, rap and other popular tunes. Besides dancing, the club serves excellent Latin American Cuisine. I don't frequent Les Poulets Cafe like I do other NY spots. It doesn't grab my attention. Personally speaking, I find the crowd very similar to that of La Vida, the main dance floor seems a little too small for a club that size and It's always been hard for me to find good dancers to dance with (on "1" or on the "2"). On the other hand, if this is the type of music you like, it might be worth the visit.

Pulse
@266 E. 54th Street (between 2nd & 3rd Ave's) N.Y.C. NY (212)688-5577 Pulse is what I call the PHANTOM CLUB because I never quite know when its going to be open for business. Word has it that Pulse has reopened it doors to the Saturday night New York mambo Public. The club is not very big so you know that the dance floor is even smaller. They play Salsa, Merengue & Spanish-pop. Adventurous dancers are advised to call ahead of time. This is a definite B.Y.O.P. type of place. I really don't consider this to be a pure Salsa Club.

Sequoia
@Pier 17, South Street Seaport N.Y.C. NY (212) 732-9090 Sequoia is located on Pier 17 on New York's South Street Seaport. It is a fairly large club offering a wonderful view of the East River. The club features a DJ spinning a music mix of house, freestyle, reggae and salsa every Friday & Saturday night. Besides the music and dancing, Sequoia allows patron to dine from it's Continental menu. I recommend that you B.Y.O.P. to this club if your interested in dancing. Like Pulse, I don't consider Sequoia to be a pure Salsa Club.

S.O.B.'s
@200 Varick Street (7th ave and w. Houston) N.Y.C. NY (212) 243-4940 Monday night is considered to be S.O.B.'s (Sounds of Brazil) night. It has developed a rep for being a hot Latin hang out spot with a loyal following and booking of top talent salsa bands. Dance lessons are available for all those interested. My only problem is that it is not a large club and it gets too crowded to dance in. A decent level of dancers show up, but I find it to be a hit or miss type thing. Go to www.SalsaNewYork.com for this month's current S.O.B. events info.

X.I.T. (formally DENIM & DIAMOND'S
Salsa Wednesdays @ 511 Lexington Avenue, Between 47th & 48th St. N.Y.C. NY, (212) 371-1600 Mid-town spot that use to be associated with Country Dancing, but once every week it now becomes a Latin Club. The club offers both DJ and live music, they have a decent size dance floor with a surface that is just right for dancing (not too sticky or too slippery), doors open @ 6:30pm, complimentary buffet 6:30pm - 7:30pm, dance lesson is taught as 7:30pm, dress code is Strictly enforced, 21 year age minimum along with proper ID is required. Recommend the B.Y.O.P. (Bring your own partner) or even a B.Y.O.G. (Bring Your Own Group) rule if you plan to dance and celebrate a special occasion there.

Bronx

Jimmy's Bronx Café
@281 W. Fordham Road (718) 329-2000 This spot is a sports bar which periodically features live salsa bands. It has recently under gone some heavy reconstruction and upgrading. The new Jimmy's Bronx Cafe is very different from the "old" one. Its very spacious, has a large dance floor and a excellent outdoor view. Besides the live music, Jimmy's Bronx Cafe serves a menu of Latin American food. Like its new competitor Wild Palms, Jimmy's Bronx Cafe is in position to become the next Side Street salsa landmark of the Bronx. The events there usually draw a decent crowd of the better dancers, so the B.Y.O. P. rule need not apply. Go to www.SalsaNewYork.com for this month's current Jimmy's Bronx Cafe events info.

Wild Palm
Phone: (718)518-1247 Wild Palm happens to be the newest of the salsa/mambo spots in the Bronx. The club officially opened during their '97 New Year's Eve party and has been catering to the NY Mambo dance crowd ever since. It was originally a neighborhood pool hall before being convereted into a club. It has it all: a large dance floor, several bars, VIP room, plenty of places to sit by (chairs & tables), simple eating menu and most importantly good music. Friday is usually their best night of the week. The club is known to draw a good crowd of dancers whenever a good band is plays there. The owners were very friendly and proud of their establishment. The B.Y.O.P. rule need not be in effect, since I've noticed a large crowd of excellent mambo dancers present during all my visits there to date. During my guided tour of the club by one of the owners, I was given a quick glance at the connecting outdoor property. An excellent place I might add for some serious summer after beach Sunday dancing. The club has the potential of being the "next Side Street" of the Bronx. My only problem with the club (speaking as a Salsero of course), is that the DJ played too much merengue for my tastes. To see what upcoming events are happening at Wild Palm please surf over to www.SalsaNewYork.com Website: www.salsaweb.com/wildpalm E-mail: Msand3@aol.com

Sidestreet
@1331 Blondell Avenue (off Westchester Square) (718) 409-4968 Sunday use to be known in New York as Sidestreet night, but since the club has changed owners it has not been the same. New York Mambo Instructor and Director to the Starlite Dance Studios David Melendez has recently bought the club from the last owners. Currently the club is opened as a catering hall, but David wants to bring the club back to its glory days and make it once again "the" hot spot for salsa/mambo dancing. To see what upcoming events are happening at Side Street please surf over to www.SalsaNewYork.com

Brooklyn

200 Fifth Avenue
@200 5th Ave. Between Union & Berkley (718) 638-2925 There is not much to say about this Brooklyn club besides the fact that they provide Latin music every Friday night, have small dance floor and play a mix of Salsa & Merengue. I would definitely B.Y.O.P. to this place until you can make a decision of your own.

Queens

Club 30-30
@30-30 Northern Boulevard (718) 361-5200 I've never been to this particular Queens location but I hear that they feature DJ and live salsa music every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. B.Y.O.P. to this spot until you can reach a decision on your own.

New JerseyBack up

Foxes
@396 St. Paul's Avenue (Jersey City) (201) 963-2224 Foxes is one of the closest Salsa/Mambo clubs that New Jersey has to New York City. It is located within a reasonable driving distance from New York (minutes away via the Holland Tunnel). The club usually offers DJ music with live bands playing there on special occasions. Its a decent size club (not very large, but not too small) with a marble dance floor, two bars, free buffet, parking and admission for ladies (at least free for ladies till 9:00 p.m.). Wednesday is considered to be Foxes hottest night where some of New Jerseys best dancers are said to gather. In my opinion, Foxes is not the New Jersey hot spot that it use to be, but it still can draw a good size crowd whenever there is a decent band playing there or during one of Luis Zegarra's Mambo Showdowns. Another plus to the club is the recent addition of Luis Zegarra's mambo classes every Wednesday & Thursday night. Besides the fact that the marble floor is not one of my favorite surfaces to dance on, I really hate the fact that the club is literally located next to a freight track. I've had the misfortune of having my path blocked by a stopped train waiting for a signal change ever single time I've gone to the club. Then to add insult on top of injury, the train just sits there while I suffer seeing the club literally on the other side of the tracks. To see what upcoming events are happening at Foxes please surf over to www.SalsaNewYork.com
